New Beatles Track Utilizes AI

Ringo Starr says the forthcoming Beatles track — a John Lennon demo they first worked on in the mid-’90s with the intention of including it on the Anthology collection — not only was completed using new Artificial Intelligence software, but features new overdubs.

“It’s not down to AI. It’s not like we’re pretending anything. That is actually John’s voice, Paul’s voice and bass playing, George on rhythm guitar and me on drums. And the two things that are new are Paul’s bass and me on drums. I really worked at it just months ago here [in Los Angeles]. And it works. It’s a beautiful song. You know, for all the madness going on around it, it’s still a beautiful track. And our last track.”

Asked why they decided to give it another try, he says, “I don’t know. Paul must’ve had a slow day. He says, ‘You know that track we did? Do you want to work on that?’ [So he sent me the files and] I drummed on it and I sang on it… It is moving, because the four of us are there, and there won’t be ever again.”

Bringing the song to completion is a string section that McCartney and producer Giles Martin recently recorded in L.A.

Like McCartney, Ringo still didn’t reveal the title or the release date. But it’s believed to be Lennon’s 1978 song “Now and Then,” which Paul, George and Ringo attempted to complete as the third “new” track for the Anthology series in 1995 and ’96 following “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love.”
