Finally there’s a sequel that goes to 11.

David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) are reuniting with Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) for Spinal Tap II. Reiner will direct the sequel, which will be released on March 19th, 2024, the 40th anniversary of This Is Spinal Tap‘s release.

The path for a sequel to the classic mockmentary — which hundreds of bands say is more like a documentary of life on the road — was set two years ago when Shearer and the others settled their lawsuit with Vivendi Universal over profits from the original film and soundtrack, and gained the rights back to the film.

Rob Reiner tells Deadline that the plot sprang from a real-life passing. “The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”

Spinal Tap’s on-screen drummer in the film, the original soundtrack and their 1992 album Break Like the Wind, Ric Parnell (under the name Mick Shrimpton), died on May 1st.
