Rolling Stone Shows R-E-S-P-E-C-T to Aretha

Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” tops Rolling Stone’s newly published list of the 500 greatest songs of all-time.

The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Nirvana and Fleetwood Mac also cracked the Top 10 of Rolling Stone‘s list of the Best 500 Songs of All Time.

Dylan charted at number-four with “Like a Rolling Stone,” with Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” at two and Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” at three..

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was five followed by Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” at six, The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” at seven, Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” at eight, Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” at nine, and continuing the theme of change and moving forward, OutKast’s “Hey Ya” at 10.

This is the first time in 17 years the publication has remade the list. The magazine says that “nearly 4000 songs received votes. Where the 2004 [and first] version of the list was dominated by early rock and soul, the new edition contains more hip-hop, modern country, indie rock, Latin pop, reggae, and R&B. More than half the songs here — 254 in all — weren’t present on the old list, including a third of the Top 100. The result is a more expansive, inclusive vision of pop, music that keeps rewriting its history with every beat.”

The voters are 49 writers and critics who contribute to the magazine.
