Florence Welch to Write Musical Based on The Great Gatsby

Florence Welch is taking a trip back from the 2020s to the Roaring Twenties — by writing a musical based on the classic novel The Great Gatsby.

Variety reports that Florence has signed on to write the lyrics for the stage show, which is aiming for a Broadway run at an undetermined date. The music will be written by Thomas Bartlett, who records under the name Doveman, and has worked with Florence + the Machine as a producer in the past.

Florence says, “This book has haunted me for a large part of my life. It contains some of my favorite lines in literature. Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism. It is an honor to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in song.”
