When Tom Petty was putting the plans in place for next month’s expanded deluxe reissue of his 1994 album Wildflowers, he talked about touring behind it with a rotating cast of guest singers.

“He was so excited to do a tour behind it,” says his widow Dana. “He really wanted to make it something special. He talked about it nonstop.”

Just days after his last tour in 2017, he talked about the idea with Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone [prn: Fuh-roni], mentioning such special guests as Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder and Steve Winwood.

“It would turn into a massive band,” says Ferrone in Rolling Stone. “He had a lot of ideas. If anyone could have pulled it together, it would have been Tom. It would have been fabulous.”

Even though Tom is no longer here, there is talk of fulfilling his dream. However, Heartbreakers’ guitarist Mike Campbell says while it would be “awkward” doing so without him, he adds that “if it was ever going to happen, the only thing that would interest me would be that project, because I know he wanted to take those songs on tour.”

But Heartbreakers’ keyboardist Benmont Tench isn’t so sure.

“Do I want the band to back up somebody else? It would just be too weird. And as far as playing the record with different singers, I don’t know. Why? It could be fantastic, and my mind is always open to anything. But right now, I’m not over this.”

The deluxe reissue of Wildflowers will be out October 16th.
