Reggae Legend Toots Hibbert Has Died at Age 77

Frederick Hibbert, better known as “Toots” of the pioneering reggae group Toots and the Maytalspassed away “peacefully” in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday at age 77 of as-yet-unannounced causes, although it’s believed to be COVID-19. Among the artists who paid tribute over the weekend were Mick JaggerKeith RichardsRonnie WoodTrey Anastasio of Phish and Jimmy Cliff. His best known songs included “Pressure Drop,” “Monkey Man” and “Do the Reggay,” which introduced a new word into the musical vocabulary in 1968.

With his roaring, soulful voice, eloquent and impactful songwriting and unquenchable political fire, the band’s leader, Toots Hibbert became one of Jamaica’s biggest stars – he had more Number One singles there than even Bob Marley – and an all-time great whose influence spanned the entire globe.
