Jason Isbell Teaming Up With Amanda Next?

Staying home the past couple of months might give us a new collaboration between Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.

The couple has been doing a number of covers on Shires’ streaming show, and Stereogum asked Isbell if he and his wife were thinking of recording a covers album. He said, “If we do that, I don’t think we’d do covers. I think we’d just write a bunch of songs together. She’s been learning how to work Pro Tools. Depending on how long this lasts or how many times this keeps coming back, we might make a record together at some point. I think that would be fun and good.”

Stereogum also asked why they haven’t done an album under their names already since she’s a member of the 400 Unit and he played with her group The Highwomen. Isbell explained, “Nothing’s really prevented it, we just haven’t really wanted to do it. it’s really as simple as that, I think. She’s had things she wanted to say musically that were very personal to her, and I have too. We help each other with those things, but it hasn’t really been necessary yet. And it’s always nice to not do something like that until you feel like you want to, until you feel like there’s a real reason. If we’re stuck in the house for a few more months and we can’t go out and tour, there’ll be a reason. Because we’ll have all this time, and I’m not ready to start selling guitars off just yet.”

Isbell and the 400 Unit’s new album, Reunions, is out today.
