Brandi Carlile: On Magazine Covers, on TV, on the Road Again

In the run-up to Sunday’s Grammy Awards, where her six nominations make her one of the top artists at the ceremony, Brandi Carlile has received more major media coverage than at any time in her nearly 15 year career.

In the past few weeks she’s had cover stories in both Billboard and Variety, taped an Aretha Franklin special for the Recording Academy, sang with Soundgarden at the Chris Cornell tribute concert. Later this week she’s booked to sing at the MusiCares tribute to Dolly Parton and the Recording Academy’s “Clive Davis” Pre-Grammy Gala as well as on the show itself.

Carlile is nominated in three of the major Grammy categories — Album…Song… and Record of the Year — and three American Roots categories — Best PerformanceAlbum and Song. Here are some more news items on her that have surfaced the past few days:

  • On February 1st, at the first of what she expects to be her annual all-women Girls Just Wanna festival in Mexico, she premiered “Common,” a new duet with Maren Morris, who’s up for five Grammys on Sunday.
  • Her new “supergroup,” Highwomen, with Jason Isbell‘s wife and fiddle player Amanda Shires, was announced by Shires, who then backpedaled on it a bit, though it still looks as if it will happen in some form eventually.
  • She’ll sing “Down to You” solo, “A Case of You” with Kris Kristofferson, and an ensemble version of “Big Yellow Taxi” with James TaylorChaka Khan and La Marisoul on the upcoming Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration album, which was taped at a Joni Mitchell tribute concert at L.A.’s Music Center last November. It will be in theaters for one night only this Thursday and come out on March 8th.
  • She’s co-producing an album for country legend Tanya Tucker, and she and her twin bandmates Tim and Phil Hanseroth have written nearly all the songs for it.
  • She’s just added eight dates to her summer tour schedule, including her first time headlining Madison Square Garden on September 14th. Pre-sale for all the new shows gets underway tomorrow (Wednesday).
