Coldplay: Martin Talks Springsteen Love

In a new Rolling Stone interview conducted by the magazine’s founder, Jann Wenner, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin discusses his love of Bruce Springsteen.

Martin says he first became aware of The Boss only about a decade ago and in a very unusual way — through a Johnny Cash cover of the song “Highway Patrolman,” off Springsteen’s first solo acoustic album, Nebraska. That became the jumping off point for exploring Springsteen’s catalog. He calls discovering Springsteen “a life-changing thing, because Bruce is so good at being Bruce and not interested in being anything else.”

He says he admires Springsteen “for making it and then saying, ‘What am I going to do with this gift I’ve been given?’ and then delivering on it a thousand times over. He pours everything into it.” Martin says seeing Springsteen, and also Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, made him think, “I’m just going to be unashamedly into what we’re doing and I’m going to pour everything into it.”

Finally, he reveals to Wenner his plan to get his arm tattooed later that day with the Springsteen song title “Working on a Dream.” He said he wanted to get it in time for Coldplay’s Saturday Night Live appearance the next day.

Later in the interview, Martin also talks about why he also came to love The Rolling Stones and about his relationship with Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
