Ryan Adams: Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Multiple Women

Ryan Adams has been accused of sexual misconduct by seven woman in an explosive New York Times article.

The claims in the report, which the Times says were corroborated by family members or friends present at the time and correspondence from Adams reviewed by the paper, include:

  • A teenage bass player who said that Adams was naked when they Skyped when she was 16 and had pet names for her body parts. He repeatedly asked about her age and texted “If people knew they would say I was like R Kelley lol.”
  • Phoebe Bridgers, who had a brief relationship with Adams when she was 20 and he was 40, said he began barraging her with texts, insisting that she prove her whereabouts or leave social situations to have phone sex and threatening suicide if she didn’t reply. When she agreed to open concerts for him — after much deliberation with her manager — in 2017 she said “the first day, he asked me to bring him something in his hotel room. I came upstairs and he was completely nude.”
  • Two female singer-songwriters, who declined to be identified for fear of retribution, described a similar pattern of Adams offering tour spots and pursuing them romantically, then sending harassing messages when things didn’t going the way he wanted.
  • Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore said discouraged her from working with other producers or managers and that “his controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s.”

Moore and several others who said they were scarred by their relationships with Adams have found one another, creating a support system and chose to speak out about their experiences in the hopes of protecting others and moving forward.

Adams’ lawyer, Andrew B. Brettler, denies many of the charges levied in the article. After it was published Wednesday afternoon, Adams tweeted about it and wrote “The picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period.”
