Jason Isbell, Trey Anastasio, Ben Harper: Talk In Depth About Sobriety

Jason IsbellBen Harper and Trey Anstasio of Phish are among the musicians who talk in depth about their sobriety in the February issue of GQ.

They each recall their lowest points in dealing with booze (for Isbell and Harper) and drugs (Anastasio). Harper, who’s 19 months in, says that one of his main reasons for getting sober was that “I’ve got teenage kids, and they need to see a sober dad.” Isbell credits his now-wife Amanda Shires. “I was trying to establish a long-term relationship with her, and it became pretty clear to me that she wasn’t going to be in a long-term relationship with a drunk.” And Anastasio talks in depth about his drug arrest and court-mandated rehab, and says that it probably saved his life.

The whole article isn’t totally serious — Isbell says that one time on tour in Austria he got so drunk that he crapped in bed while he was asleep. He threw his soiled underwear out the window, and he was telling his band about it when “a Saint Bernard runs around the side of the hotel with my underwear in his mouth. To me, it looked like: ‘Oh, my God, this dog thinks that somebody needs to be rescued and is trying to find him.’ We jumped in the van and rode off up the hill to the next town, and the Saint Bernard was following along behind us, with the little medicine thing around his neck, trying to find me and rescue me.”
