Red Hot Chili Peppers: Kiedis Comments on Climate Change

Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis co-wrote an op-ed for Rolling Stone that urges state and local officials to declare climate emergencies in the wake of inaction by the federal government.

Kiedis penned the piece with film documentarian Rory Kennedy and Trevor Neilson of the Malibu Foundation. On Sunday, the Chili Peppers joined Beck and St. Vincent at Malibu Love Sesh, a benefit for the organization, which was set up in the wake of November’s Woolsey Fire that burned Malibu and other areas near it.

In the article, Kiedis and company urge people to “come together and help solve the greatest threat to humankind and embrace our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet for future generations.” The say that on Sunday a gathering of “artists, climate experts and victims of the recent wildfires will call on the state of California and its cities to pass legislation declaring a climate emergency — an all-out effort to transition society and the economy at rapid speed.”

They add that State Senator Henry Stern is expected to announce a resolution endorsing this climate emergency declaration, which if passed will aggressively address the climate change threat.
