Dave Grohl Revives Cal Jam For A Second Year

Dave Grohl will hold Cal Jam ’18 — the second year of his festival named after a pair of legendary 1970s concerts — on October 6th in San Bernardino, California’s Glen Helen Regional Park.

Grohl recently spoke to Variety about the one-day event, which feature a headlining set by Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop with his Pure Pop Depression band, Garbage, Greta Van Fleet, Tenacious D, and others. Here are some highlights:

  • Asked which artists from the original ’70s Cal Jams he’d like to have at his current version, Grohl named Heart and Foreigner and also mentioned that Joe Perry of Aerosmith has joined Foo Fighters during last year’s set.
  • As for his dream Cal Jam headliner, he chose AC/DC, “because they’re the greatest rock and roll band in the world.” He also said that he wanted to have Slayer there “before they go away.” He just “wouldn’t want to have to go on after them.”
  • He also explained why he chose to resurrect the Cal Jam name, saying it was suggested by a person he works with during a conversation about some of the classic festivals from back in the day. Grohl said he was inspired by “those California festivals, the Us Festival and Cal Jam, they just looked so [effing] fun: hot and loud and dirty.” He said that’s how he likes it.
