Decemberists: More Shows Axed

The Decemberists have scrapped all of their shows this week because of Colin Meloy‘s continuing vocal issues.

Tuesday’s show in Red Bank, New Jersey and their appearance at Mountain Jam Saturday in Hunter New York have been canceled. Wednesday’s show in Brooklyn, New York is rescheduled for August 14th, and Friday’s show in North Adams, Massachusetts will be on October 4th. Refunds are available for fans who can’t make the new dates. The group had already postponed three other shows over the past two weeks.

Meloy wrote a lengthy note about his issue on the Decemberists Facebook page, saying that he saw five doctors in three states and that “the consensus was fatigue, strain and irritation of the vocal folds. Nothing that can’t be healed with vocal exercise. I just need rest.”

He adds that he’ll be making some other changes. “This is also a great wake-up call for me. Clearly gone are the days where I can just leap on stage, bottle of wine in hand, and start belting out high Ds and Es for two hours straight after the most desultory of warmups. I have been working with professionals to develop a new tour regimen that will help my voice withstand the rigors of tour. Warmups and diet, being conscientiousness about my voice use between shows — all part of a constellation of things I can do.”

The Decemberists’ next scheduled show is June 21st in Seattle.
